Hunter Learns to Fly

Hunter was the smallest chick and probably the last egg that hatched.  He had problems figuring out how to fly successfully.
Here's a photo album of Hunter's first flying adventures.

(Thanks to Scott Wright, Ohio Division of Wildlife nest monitor, for his great pictures and for his fledgling rescues.)
Here is Hunter riding up the elevator again after his fourth crash landing.  He could fly down, but he couldn't get back up to the ledge again.  Then he told his big sister all about it.
The fifth time Hunter tried to fly, Scott came and caught him again and took him back up the elevator.  But Hunter got away, and Scott had to chase him around a kitchen before he could catch him and put him back out the window.
This is the sixth and last time that Scott had to rescue Hunter.  He landed in a street and Scott and his friend, Tony, had to stop traffic.
It wasn't easy
The first time Hunter tried to fly, he landed on the ground where several policemen found him.  Scott returned him to the nesting ledge and Mom bit Scott.
The second time Hunter tried to fly, a fireman picked him up off the ground.  Scott took him to the Zoo, where they checked him over, kept him for a few days and fattened him up.
This is Hunter in an executive office in the skyscraper where his family nests. He just rode up to the 12th floor on the elevator and was about to be put back out onto the ledge.
This is what happened after Hunter's third attempt at flying:  He was taken to the Zoo again, checked over, and then put back onto the 12th floor of the skyscraper.
Now Hunter can fly back to the family's ledge all by himself!
