FALCON FLASH Dateline: Cleveland, Ohio February 2004
SW and Buckeye, our resident mom and dad falcons, have remained at their nestsite during the cold Cleveland winter to guard their territory. Soon they will begin their annual nesting life-cycle. Because falcons nest on buildings in cities, we are able to catch a glimpse of the fastest creatures on earth. Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of the pictures are taken.
This is a picture of "Buckeye", the dad peregrine falcon at the "Raptors in the City" program's study nestsite. He is perched atop the "FalconCam" that broadcasts the nesting drama live on the internet. Our thanks to EcoCity Cleveland for providing the FalconCams as a public service. Below is a picture (captured from the FalconCam) of the falcon nestbox on the left windowsill of a skyscraper in Cleveland, Ohio - 12 stories up. On the right windowsill you can see 3 chicks from the 2003 nesting season, several weeks old, out for a walk. Look carefully behind the window and you will see our penpal, Scott Wright, volunteer nest monitor for the Ohio Division of Wildlife and photographer extraordinaire.
This is a picture of "SW", the mom peregrine falcon at the "Raptors in the City" program's study nestsite. She is perched on the "FalconCam" and watching Scott Wright behind the window as he takes her picture. Thanks to Scott Wright for his expert commentary during nesting season and for his photographs.
