Banding Day - Part 1

The eyases were banded today by the Ohio Division of Wildlife.

First, a protective drawbridge was raised to keep the frightened chicks from panicking and falling over the edge of the building.  The parents were very upset …..

Human hands quickly grabbed the chicks from the nest and they were brought into the executive offices of the skyscraper that is just inside their nesting ledge.   Each chick was checked over and blood was drawn.  The three-week-old chicks seem to be developing well.

Our thanks to 2 special falcon fans for the videos and for the “Box of chicks” picture.
The window was opened and the parents began divebombing the humans who dared to approach the nest……

The biologists determined that there are two females and two males, and the chicks received their bands and names:

S/20 ('s' over 20) - "Spirit" - female

S/21 - "Tiki" - female

B/60 - "Tiger" - male

B/71 - "Thriller" - male

Then the chicks were returned to their nesting ledge and to their worried parents.
